White Dog Cafe Chester Springs & Historic Yellow Springs Present America 250: Clay, Compassion & Community Dinner
CHESTER SPRINGS, PA — White Dog Cafe Chester Springs, located on the historic site of the Vickers pottery, and Historic Yellow Springs, a local history and arts nonprofit have partnered to present America 250: Clay, Compassion & Community Dinner — a one-of-a-kind immersive dining experience on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, from 5:00 to 8:00 PM. Tickets are $120 per person.
The evening unites local history, handcrafted pottery, and farm-fresh cuisine to create a powerful sense of place. Guests will dine using handmade ceramic bowls crafted from Chester County’s own iron-rich clay — echoing the work of John Vickers, the Quaker artisan whose pottery was not only rooted in the local landscape, but whose homestead also served as a stop on the Underground Railroad. The same clay once shaped into everyday vessels was part of a place that quietly offered refuge, safety, and resistance through acts of compassion and courage.
Inspired by the principles of Radical Compassion, part of a partnership with The Clay Studio’s Radical Americana, series of exhibitions organized by a consortium of Philadelphia’s premier arts and cultural institutions, the dinner positions food and craft as shared experiences that foster connection, reflection, and care for one another. By gathering around handmade objects and a thoughtfully prepared seasonal menu, guests are invited to slow down, engage deeply, and experience firsthand how history, art, and nourishment intersect. At the conclusion of the evening, participants will take home a lasting reminder of this shared experience in the form of the handcrafted bowl they used during the meal, made from locally sourced clay drawn from the same Chester County landscape that inspired the night’s stories.
An Evening Told in Three Acts
First Course — The Clay Beneath Our Feet: Guests are welcomed with the first course served on handmade ceramic bowls crafted from local Chester County clay — mined from the iron-rich vein on the grounds of nearby Historic Yellow Springs. The potter’s process will be narrated live as the course is served, drawing a direct line between today’s artisan practice and the 175-year-old traditions of John Vickers.
Second Course — The Chef’s Table Story: As the second course arrives, White Dog Cafe’s Chef will share the inspiration behind the evening’s menu — why each ingredient was chosen, how the land and seasons shaped the plate, and what it means to cook with intention and a deep sense of place in Chester County.
Dessert — History at the Table: The evening closes with a reflection from Uwchlan Township Historical Commission’s Lee Wisdoma Historic Yellow Springs historian on the legacy of John Vickers — a Chester County Quaker whose life and work were defined not only by extraordinary craft, but by principled acts of social defiance and compassion that still resonate as America marks its 250th anniversary.
“Join us for an evening where clay, cuisine, and compassion meet. Reserve your seat, support local makers and farmers, and take part in a one-of-a-kind dining experience rooted in Chester County’s rich history and community.”

About Historic Yellow Springs
Nestled on 140 acres in Chester County, Historic Yellow Springs is a nationally recognized living village where history, arts, and the environment intersect. Long known to the Lenape and first referenced in a Philadelphia newspaper in 1722, the village has played many roles over three centuries — including as the first purpose-built hospital of the Revolutionary War and later as summer quarters for the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts. Today, the village is listed on the National Register of Historic Places.
The site includes six historic structures and three 19th-century bathhouses, with significant acreage preserved through conservation easements with the Natural Lands Trust. A vibrant community hub, Historic Yellow Springs hosts a renowned annual Art Show, operates a respected art school offering fine arts and ceramics classes, serves as a sought-after wedding venue, and provides free year-round programs and events. Visitors are invited to explore meadow trails from dawn to dusk, attend Town Tours & Village Walks, enjoy Jazz at the Springs, the Holiday Stroll, and experience a range of exhibitions and community celebrations throughout the year.

About Radical Compassion
Radical Compassion: Art as Social Action brings together 13 nationally recognized contemporary artists whose practices center on connection and shared responsibility. Considered collectively, their work explores art as a living, contemporary force, one that invites questions and dialogue about personal and collective responsibility, challenges indifference to suffering, and deepens understanding of human connection. Grounded in Chester County’s Quaker, abolitionist, and ceramic legacies, Radical Compassion asks viewers to consider how art, through use, exchange, and encounter, can help us imagine and hope for a more connected future. This exhibit is part of Radical Americana, a region-wide initiative coordinated by The Clay Studio (Philadelphia, PA) for the U.S. 250th anniversary, connecting current artistic practices with local histories of collective care and civic engagement. The exhibit is on display at Historic Yellow Springs from May 25th- August 9th. Visit Yellowsprings.org for more details.
