Nonprofit Through Leadership Series

Last week, CCCBI hosted another session of our Nonprofit Thought Leadership Series, From Surviving to Thriving: Creative Benefits Strategies for Nonprofits.

Our series sponsor, OneDigital, brought Mike Troy to present a comprehensive overview of what organizations should consider for employee benefits, including opportunities for cost savings and added benefits that are often overlooked. He provided compelling statistics and data that employers may not be aware of, but that can help when making benefit package decisions.

After the presentation, all registration proceeds were donated to one Member nonprofit in the room. This session's recipient was The Camphill School!

Thank you to all who joined us for an informative presentation. Our next session is coming up in early June! Stay tuned for registration information and our exciting topic in the coming weeks.

Legislative Update

House Bill 2103 Narrowly Passes in PA House

The Pennsylvania House this week narrowly passed legislation to explicitly prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity. While the Pennsylvania Human Relations Act already bans discrimination on the basis of race, sex, religion, and disability, supporters of the bill argue that the absence of explicit LGBTQ protections has created gaps in enforcement, particularly in employment, housing, and public accommodations. Rep. Malcolm Kenyatta (D-Philadelphia) said "If you want to understand why we’ve offered this bill, why it has been offered and reintroduced for 20-plus years, it is because Pennsylvanians are experiencing this discrimination and they want it to end."

Republicans contested the bill in the House, which passed by a 1 vote margin. Rep. Charity Grimm Krupa (R-Fayette) said "This bill shifts power away from elected representatives and places it in the hands of judges who will decide over time how far these definitions reach. And while that plays out, it will not be large institutions that carry the burden, it will be the small business owners, it will be the faith-based organizations, it will be the individuals, people of faith, forced to choose between their beliefs and the threat of litigation.” The bill faces uncertainty in the PA Senate, where Republican leaders have expressed concerns about potential conflicts with religious liberty protections and policies governing school athletics.
