CCCBI Annual Golf Outing

On Tuesday, August 22nd, CCCBI hosted our 2023 Annual Golf Outing!

Professionals from across Chester County joined us for what was referred to as, "the best outing in the region by a mile!" The day was filled with perfect weather for the golfers and fantastic food during the pre-outing Lunch & the famous Surf & Turf Dinner.

This year's outing would not have been possible without the help of our host, Applebrook Golf Club and staff, or our sponsors, WSFS Bank, IBEW 654, Abel Brothers Towing, Citizens Bank, EZ Pizzi Cleaning, and The Cleaning Agency

Thank you to all who attended and contributed to making this signature event a success!

Foursome spots for next year are already filling up, reserve yours today!

Lunch & Learn: The Future of Cannabis in the Workplace

Earlier today, Meredith Buettner of the Pennsylvania Cannabis Coalition, and Linda B. Hollinshead of Duane Morris LLP, joined CCCBI for a Lunch & Learn on the Future of Cannabis in the Workplace.

Our conference room was packed full of member businesses and community partners of all sizes, including the County of Chester, YMCAs and IBEW and more. Attendees came with interest in how Cannabis legalization can affect employers' hiring practices and regular operations, and what current legislation and guidelines look like.

After a robust discussion with questions from several participants in the room, it is clear that this topic will continue to be of interest to our membership.

WIB Awards Dinner Will Offer Childcare for Attendees

In an effort to uphold our initiatives to reform the childcare industry and support working families, CCCBI will cover the cost of babysitting for any parent who would like to bring their children to the 2023 Women Influencing Business Awards Dinner.

White Manor Country Club will open their KidZone from 4:00pm to 7:00pm to supply parents who are unable to find childcare with a reliable option as they attend this stellar event.

This year, the WIB Committee will honor Andrea Youndt, CEO of the Chester County Food Bank as the Female Business Leader of the Year and Alaina Kearney, Director of Marketing for Barsz, Gowie, Amon & Fultz as the Rising Star of the Year.

The celebration will feature Cherelle Parker, Democratic Nominee for Mayor of Philadelphia, as the Keynote Speaker and will offer a special recognition of Commissioner Michelle Kichline in honor of her nine years of service to Chester County.

Legislative Update

PA Senate to Return Next Week

The Pennsylvania State Senate announced that it is returning on August 30th, ahead of the Fall Session to complete the “necessary budgetary implementation legislation,” or Code bill(s). Senate Republican Caucus spokesperson, Kate Flessner, said in a statement, “We are in communication with House leaders, and we remain hopeful the House will also choose to reconvene before September 26.”

The Senate returned to legislative Session on August 3rd to “sign” the General Fund bill (HB611), a $45.5 billion spending plan.  The General Fund bill is $1.7billion less than what was passed by the House of Representatives in early June and $300million less than what Governor Shapiro originally proposed in his March Budget Address. However, the package is a 5% increase over last Fiscal Year and includes $1billion out of surplus funds, leaving approximately $13billion. The budget does not increase taxes, but seemingly will not include an accelerated decrease to Corporate Net Income Tax.

It is unclear what will be agreed to in the accompanying Code bills that still have to approved by the House, which is not expected to return until the end of September.

Back in June, Governor Josh Shapiro (D) had seemingly reached a deal with the Republican controlled Senate that included $100 million for a Lifeline Scholarship program. This new program would give up to $15,000 per year in state-funded vouchers to eligible students to be utilized for tuition at a nonpublic school. While the education funding was a major goal of House Democrats after a decision in the Commonwealth Court that ruled Pennsylvania’s public education funding system is unconstitutional, the school voucher program that was presented to them apparently late in the budget process was a non-starter.

The Senate did send an amended version of a General Fund bill (HB611) back to the House, reducing the amount earlier approved by the House from $46.9 billion to roughly $45billion in spending. HB611 passed 29-21 with Democrat Senator Anthony Williams as the lone Democrat voting with the Republican majority.  The House of Representatives returned on July 5th passing HB611 with the promise that the Governor would not enact the school voucher program as long as it is considered in the future.
