Youth Leadership Program Holds Nonprofit Day at CCCBI

On Tuesday, our Youth Leadership Program had the BEST time at Nonprofit Day!

Students from 15 different schools visited CCCBI's Headquarters to hear from four different local nonprofits, utilize their etiquette skills learned from the previous program day, and participate in team building exercises to grow as a group.

The students heard from Nick Imbesi of the Chester County Food Bank.  Nick shared the most recent Impact report from his organization.  Students were surprised at the number of people who actually need help with food insecurity.  A lasting impression was made by the realization that there are students in our schools who need help with getting enough food on weekends when they are not at school for help with lunch and breakfast.

Amanda Vinciguerra from the organization Breakthrough T1D (formally Juvenile Diabetes JDRF) also came to share her work with the YLP participants. The students learned lots about what type 1 diabetes is and how it affects your body. In addition, Amanda shared how the students could get involved with fund raising and awareness building activities.

We also heard from Lorraine Voisard; the Business & Operations Manager of Ann’s Heart located in Phoenixville. Their mission is to provide a place of welcome and human services to all Phoenixville area people. Lorraine shared the work of Ann’s Heart, providing meals and shelter to people in need. All of the students live in Chester County and many were surprised by the level of need.

Our last speaker of the day was Patty Knecht with Holiday Hope Chest.  Patty and her husband Duane, operate this very busy nonprofit along with other family and board members.  They provide an opportunity for families to come and shop for holiday toys for their children.  Patty explained to the students the need for such a service and the expanded demand for the service.

Each presenter shared with the students a challenge that they face in operating their nonprofit.  Some were looking for more donations, both physical and financial, some needed more volunteers to come and help and some were marketing challenges that needed to be met. And some of the organizations faced all of these challenges. In small groups, the students worked to provide some suggestions for the organizations.

Special thanks to Nick, Amanda, Lorraine and Patty for coming to the Chamber to spread awareness and educate the students about the needs within our community and how THEY can actively make a difference.

We're so looking forward to our next program day in December at Nth Solutions, LLC!

Legislative Update

Wrapping Up the Year with Diverse Pathways in Education

We could not have picked a better topic for our last Speaker Series of 2024!

Our expert panelists not only shared their unique journeys from high school to career kick starters to present day success, but they also shared why these various pathways were, and still are, essential to our business community.

For some, a four-year college degree is the most accessible way forward. For others, trade schools or tech schools spark both joy and opportunity as we're seeing a labor shortage. No one route is the "correct" way forward and according to our panelists, it starts with education from an early age.

It is essential for students to gain exposure in a wholistic approach to education and the workforce without stigma or judgement as we have historically seen. Establishments like the Chester County Intermediate Unit (CCIU) and speakers like ours today are the changes that will inspire and invigorate our next generation.

Special thanks to:

Deborah Chang Abel, Co-Owner and Operator of Abel Brothers Towing

William Adams, President / Asst. Business Manager of IBEW 654

and Dr. George Fiore, Executive Director of CCIU.

Breakthrough T1D

The Juvenile Diabetes Foundation, now Breakthrough T1D, is founded by Lee Ducat, Carol Lurie, Erwin Lurie, and a group of parents whose children have T1D right here in the Greater Delaware Valley! Their conviction is clear: through research, T1D can and will be cured.

Over the course of our 50+ year history, our organization, community, and T1D science have evolved. People with T1D are living healthier, longer lives thanks to the life-changing research, access, and educational breakthroughs we’ve advanced together.

A condition that was once diagnosed as Juvenile Diabetes (the “JD” in JDRF) is now medically known as type 1 diabetes (T1D) and impacts all ages and stages of life.  Our new brand reflects who we are today and the future breakthroughs we’re pursuing for the T1D community. No matter where you or a loved one is in their T1D journey, we are here for you. Our new purpose statement says it best:  As we drive toward curing type 1 diabetes, we help make everyday life better for the people who face it.

Our mission is to accelerate life-changing breakthroughs to cure, prevent, and treat type 1 diabetes (T1D) and its complications.

To accomplish this, we have invested more than $2.5 billion in research funding since our inception. We are an organization built on a grassroots model of people connecting in their local communities, collaborating regionally and globally for efficiency and broader fundraising impact, and uniting on a global stage to pool resources, passion, and energy.

We collaborate with academic institutions, policymakers, and corporate and industry partners to develop and deliver a pipeline of innovative therapies to people living with T1D.

Our staff and volunteers throughout the United States, around the world, and at our five international affiliates are dedicated to advocacy, community engagement, and a shared vision of a world without T1D.

We have played a role in nearly every major T1D advance made in the last 50-plus years. These breakthroughs—including drugs, devices, and cell therapies—are now helping people with T1D live longer, healthier lives. Breakthrough T1D’s strategy is to prioritize research funding that has the highest likelihood of accelerating the delivery of therapies to cure and prevent T1D while maintaining strategic gap-filling funding in research that improves lives of people with diabetes.

Our research priorities are broken up into two areas: Curing T1D and Improving lives.  You can find out more about our local events here and more about our national efforts, research and fundraising here!

We’re all in this together! Learn how to get involved, as November is Diabetes Awareness Month and make an impact to drive T1D breakthroughs forward.
