Why Pro-Growth Tax Policy Must Be a Priority
Provided by the U.S. Chamber of Commerce
|
When the U.S. tax system is competitive, wages rise, the standard of living for Americans improves, and the economy grows. That’s why the Chamber is calling on candidates and elected officials to support competitive tax policies that will help achieve the goal of at least 3% annual economic growth as outlined in our Growth and Opportunity Imperative.
Why it matters: Next year, lawmakers will have the opportunity to advance pro-growth tax policy as they work to avoid what could be the largest automatic tax increase in American history, with key individual, business, and estate tax provisions set to expire.
Be smart: Tax policy can influence economic growth by, for example, fostering capital investment. This improves productivity and boosts wages. Pro-growth tax policy also strengthens U.S. global economic competitiveness, attracting jobs, businesses, investment, and innovation.
In 2017, Congress passed the Tax Cuts and Jobs Act, which lowered and simplified the federal income tax burden on American families and workers and modernized the United States’ approach to taxing business and investment income.
As a result:
- Wages grew for production and non-supervisory workers.
- Businesses invested more in their operations.
- The economy grew faster than forecasted.
Our take: "As Americans, we all want future generations to have more opportunities and a brighter future. The surest path to achieve this ambition is by growing our economy by at least 3% annually and securing a competitive U.S. tax system,” said Chamber Executive Vice President Neil Bradley. “Taxes may be inevitable, but their negative effects on our daily lives don’t have to be."
