SEPTA Funding Cuts Threaten Local Rail Lines

On Wednesday, CCCBI attended a press conference at Paoli Station with multiple legislators and community leaders to bring awareness to the negative impact the proposed funding cuts will have on Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Fifty bus routes and five regional rail lines are at risk, among the jobs of thousands of transit workers, reliable transportation for workers, residents and visitors, as well as the greater Philadelphia region's economy. The Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission, DVRPC, projects there will be 1 million additional daily vehicle miles traveled (VMT) in Philadelphia alone and an additional 1 million VMT in the four southeast Pennsylvania counties: Bucks, Chester, Delaware, and Montgomery. This equates to at least 275,000 more cars on the road daily. The increase of cars on the road will result in an 18% longer commute on I-95 southbound from Academy Road to Vine Street Expressway, and a 20% longer commute on the Schuylkill Expressway eastbound from US 422 to Girard Avenue.

Chester County Commissioner and Vice Chair of SEPTA, Marian Moskowitz, stressed the value that investment in SEPTA has brought to the region, including jobs, public safety as well as reliable, clean and safe transportation.

CCCBI's President & CEO, Laura Manion, stood among fellow chamber executives, Katie Walker (Greater West Chester Chamber of Commerce), Rachel Cathell (Western Chester County Chamber of Commerce), Cheryl Kuhn (Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce), and Laurie Ryan (Exton Region Chamber of Commerce) alongside Tim Phelps, Executive Director of the Transportation Management Association of Chester County (TMACC). Tim's remarks noted how if these SEPTA cuts go into affect, over 250,000 additional vehicles will be present on Chester County and our neighboring counties roadways, causing a severe threat for roadway safety and the efficiency of our first responders.

Thank you to all of our community leaders and government officials who attended, spoke and continue to advocate on behalf of SEPTA and the region it serves.
